Lesson Review 18/10/10 and 21/10/10

18/10/10

in this lesson we couldnt focuss on anything as all the filming was planned for another day and could not be done in this lesson. instead we worked on analysis and futher research.

21/10/10 Filming

Yesterday in the lesson we did some more filming for our music video. The shots that we filmed where the scenes where our character was at home. Therefore to make sure that scenes looked realistic we used the set of Ryan's house. We were going to film the shots in college using a college computer, but the setting looked to much like school and the college internet sytem does not allow access to Facebook.com due to college regulations. The first shot we filmed was were the character walked into his house. We used a long shot for this. We did another shot where the character walked into his house turning the key. The next shot we took from inside the house, repeating the action. - In editing these shots will be put together to show continuity and to be more interesting. The next shot we did we a mid shot of our character turning on the computer and viewing Facebook using a over the shoudler shot.

Designs for Digipaks (ancillary) research

For covers or designs of both albums or singles have a main focus for the purpose of the design. This is due to whether or not the band/artist want to sell themselves or their music. If they are trying to sell themselves then the design would be based on photography of them. The use of this would help promote the band or artist. this use of design is more likely seen in mainstream music rather than independent music that tend to use more visual image design like a picture related to the idea of the album. Independent music artists do this to make the item  (the music)  the thing they are selling to the audience/market rather than the band like mainstream.

In addition a use of the artist image on a single/album cover is more likely to be used on their first released CD. This is also to promote themselves. Evidence of this is in the winner's single of The X Factor each year.

Production update

At this point in time we have covered the following things :
  •  we have completed our storyboard
  • we have got our music and currently working on developing the voice part to the track
  • we have uploaded and captured all the filming that we have so far
  • we have edited the different clips that we want ready to place in the time line
  • we know want venue we are using but need to call to book the place for the right day.
Things we need to do next:
  • call for venue booking
  • find a female actress for the music video lead role
  • need to create a event on facebook for a party to film the party scenes for the music video so that the people invited can act as extras
  • film party
  • film the facebook scenes looking at profiles etc

Lesson Review -14/10/10 and 15/10/10

14/10/10
In the morning i transferred the logging information onto an excel spreadsheet with the timings of each shot, the description and whether or not we where using the shot. However, when i had finish the document it would not upload to the presentation website - Prezi.com- so therefore with difficulty and searching on google i have discovered new forms of interactive media. These are 'GoogleDocs' where you  upload word documents which then you can transfer to a blog.

In our media lesson Morgy worked on the audio track that we are using for our video. She was trying to make the audio of the singer louder to hear in the track which she "whacked some EQ on it ". Obviously it was more technical that this but that this context was the easiest way to explain to me due to my music tech skills are non-existent.

Also, in the lesson our teacher shown us an example of a digi pack which we will have to make for our ancillary task reinstating that we are not just designing a album cover but a whole pack.

15/10/10
In today's lesson our group have carried on with our blogging making sure it is up to date. Plus, we have planned more on organising our filming for the party scenes. The venue that we are using is a place in Totton called Totton and Eling Community Centre ( http://www.totton-and-eling-tc.gov.uk/Living_In_The_Town/Totton__Eling_Community_Centre.aspx) Ryan will go down today to arrange the date which should be the 5th or 19th November. this allows time for the band to practise and give us time to film the other shots including are female character.

We also looked further into the different digi packs. An example of the digi pack we looked at was Little Creatures-Night People.

We looked at how the music video relates to the digi pack. We noticed that the colours corresponds together and how the music is relaxed and is shown in the artwork of the pack though using a forest background which is quite and tranquil rather than a busy city. Also in the digi pack they have included  a booklet for the buyer to look at. The design is a fold out booklet with fits with the cover. This booklet includes the lyrics to the songs on the CD, both in English and Japanese to suit its target audience. Also, there is listed the different people involved with the production of the album and a "thanks" to the fans section. The Cd design is just a simple pattern still in the same colours of green. Back cover includes more information such as a website and rights of the music.

However, Alice Coltrane, takes a different approach to the digi pack design. The booklet is full of photography  including the colours and the CD design its self takes on the imagery of an old fashioned record to fit with the new wave jazz.mixing the old design with the new technology.

Logged Shots

Editing - 11/10/10

Due to the group not being able to film the party scenes for the music video until the half term, we thought it would be a more practical idea to log the shots we have already filmed. this would save time later in the production. First we captured all of our scenes onto the computer using a software called "adobe premier pro". The reason why we captured the shots (including the ones that we did not want) before we logged the shots was due to using a previous tape from last years AS coursework the timings did not match. Therefore i went through each shot gathering times from the computer. then deleting the shots that we where not using. Also due to went capturing we made sure that there was plenty of room either side of the clip so that we did not miss anything out. Plus, when we captured some clips where closely linked and where too short to manage so we captured them as one shot. So after all the shots where logged i started to cut apart the shots putting on the timeline for later. Even though this process was not ideal, it became a good method from AS where the first time we tried to do the process as taught i cut bits of clips out when capturing.

Filming 8/10/10

In today's lesson we did some more filming for the beginning part of our music video. The first shot we did was a long shot with our actor, Ryan, sat on a bench. In this clip he had to eat his sandwhiches then suddenly look up to look at this girl with a jaw dropped face. We took another shot of the same process but more centered mid shot than the angled previous shot. plus, we did a over the shoulder shot of ryan getting his sandwhiches out of his bag. After filming is completed we will edit these shots into a sequence.

We also did some filming off the college campus for the scene where the character goes home. For this we did different pan shots in various place. However the only problem when filming these clips where the various people walking in the way of the camera that where not there in the preivous shot which would have broken continuity.

The Start of filming- 07/08/10

in this lesson we started our filming. the scenes we did in this lesson where the first scenes of the music video, where we first introduce the character. we used Mid-shot for the frame where our male character walks passed the camera into the room. Next we went inside the room and filmed him coming into the room again which would be put together in editing to create continuity. Morgy then gathered some of her friends to act as extras to show other members of the class. Here we filmed our character walking to sit down at his seat.

Once we finished with the classroom set we then had to find one of our props- a clock. We wanted a shot of a clock to show the difference in time between scenes of the music video. Our group went down to the exams department to used their clock as it looks like a generic clock that most schools/colleges would use. Also, rather than taking a normal close up shot, we decided use a different angle to make it more interesting and unique. Next we filmed an over the shoulder shot where our character looks through songs on his Ipod and two side shots of him putting his earphones in each ear.

An Idea!

The group discided to focuss some ideas, Ryan told the group about his song and what it is about which was meeting a girl at a party. Due to the story of the song is straight forward we thought that the best concept for the music video would be to set the band up playing at a party. The Narrative story is about a boy liking a girl which at the party he will get the girl in the end. In this lesson we carried on with our storyboard which was started by ryan in his spare time when developing ideas. the group looked it over and thought that this idea for the music video would work well as it incorpreated ideas from the videos we researched. We then developed more by adding different frames and shots. However, so far we have not put timings on yet. Plus, as a group we thought that the party scenes could have some improvised shots due to if we did plan some shots people might not act normally as they would at a party making the music video seem un realistic.

WHAT IS THE PURPOSE OF A MUSIC VIDEO?
A music video is more than just a video built around music to put on tv or the internet. A music video is a form of advertisement to either sell or promote one of the following things:
-the band/artist
-the single
-the album
-the genre of the music
- the culture either of the band or around the music.

In our music video our purpose would be to promote the single as well as the band. This is shown through combining the genres of music video of narrative and performance creating a bricolage.

DIFFERENT TYPES
There are different types of music video that can be created such as performance, narrative, artistic/stylistic,and origanal. For our video we are using performance and narrative. performance consists of the band/artist performing and reflects the experience of seeing the band/artist live such as Bon Jovi - Livin on a prayer( shown below). Narrative is where a story in incorprated into the music video which could link to the song.

SHORT HISTORY
  •  the first music video was made in 1926
  • Music videos came their own and thought of more due to Micheal Jackson's music video of thriller. this was the longest music video on record and took more of a film production approch to music video making. this video is a good way of advertisement too.
  • music videos became very popular and even where a way of doing world releases through the music video.
  • due to the popularity of music videos in 1981 in the US MTV was launched a separate channel just for music videos, this showed how serious music video became rather than just a performance of a band playing. this started a trend with later channels developing just for music videos such as The Hits, TMF and 4music.

Researching Music Videos

If we are making a music video we need to not only look at other professional videos but look at music videos that are similar to the idea we are trying to create. Therefore, the following videos include something that we can take from as an idea basis.
