Evaluation 4 -How did you use media technologies in the construction and research, planning and evaluation stages?

Evaluation 3 - What have you learned from your audience feedback?

Evaluation 2 - How effective is the combination of your main product and ancillary texts?

The two ancillary tasks that I have created for this piece of coursework are a digi pack and a poster to promote the digi pack. The combination of the main product and ancillary tasks are effective as all three links together in some way or form. This has been done through the storyline of the music video is using characters at youth age so I have made sure that this corresponds to the ancillary tasks I have used settings and people of the same background.

In addition, the front cover of the digi pack includes the name of the band in glows sticks with the light of a lamppost. I have done this as the image reflects the name being “lost” in the “light”. The glow sticks also act as iconography of youth because this age range uses them the most and the target market for the combination of the coursework production is aim at this youth market. The combination with this image with music video is effective as it promotes the band not only the single which is different. I think this is effective as it create triangulation within the promotion of the band including the music and the band itself.

Also, I think this combination with the ancillary tasks and the media product is effective with each promoting a different aspect it works. This is due to where the music video has the focus of the single promoting to the audience to the music, the audience are more likely with the poster to buy the digi pack. Then with the digi pack this promotes the band.

Furthermore, the colours I have used with the digi pack and the poster are effective towards the main product as have mostly male connotations. This is due to the type of music of the single that the group and I have used in the music video could appeal to males more than females. However, although within the target market of the music there could be females too. This is why as well as having the black background, the glow stick colours are range in a series of yellows and greens which are seen as unisex colours but including the colour pink to include some femininity.

Evaluation 1 - In what ways does your media product use, develop or challenge forms and conventions of real media products?

Ancillary Task 2 - the poster

http://twitpic.com/4w7ycn

The poster that i have created for the band would be sent to differernt music magazines and film magazines as the traget audience for them would be the same audience that i would be targeting which would be youth. It would also be published on the web and in busstops. The poster would link with the digi pak from having the same logo. For the subtitles i wanted them to be different and have created them my self from drawing them. i wanted it to be edgy to fit which the whole skater vibe. i used white as it is contrasting and easy  to stand out which is important to see it from a distance. I have used the photo of the crowd which shows them having a good time. This would give connotations to the audience that they would have a good time to if they where to listen to the music. Plus, the people in the poster are youth which would relate to the audience. i like that the logo of the band although is the same is differnt with the background

When uploading the poster i had differculties in uploading the file and changing formats. Therfore i had to take a picture using my phone to upload it onto a subcompany of twitter - twitpic. However, the differculty of uploading was, although stressful, rewarding as it allowed me to challenage myself through using new forms of media under pressure situations.

Ancilliary task 1 - the digi pak

these are the covers for my digi pak. I have chosen to use a background colour of black as it is a unsex colour. Plus with the colours on top it makes them stand out. For the front cover i wanted it to reflect the band. this has been done by the cover doing what the band's name is which is the title being "lost" in the "light". The product has changed from my orginal design by not including a lampost i was going to take the photo myself but thought that i would not be able to get the lampost and the writing into the same shot. Therefore, i looked at different lamposts from googleimages.com which are shown below right. the lampost was going to be the source where the bands name was "lost" in and the lamppost would bring in connotations from the street which is a sterotypical hang out place for youth. Then i descided that it would be best to have more of a desk lamp to give connations of students which would relate to the target audience and the characters of the music video.
However, i felt that maybe this could look out of place with the glow sticks as they give connotations of partys yet the desklamp would show studying and working hard which is not what i wanted to represent. Therefore i dropped it completely.

For the back cover i have used the glow sticks again and have used different colours. The colours i have chosen are unsex colours as the target market would be of both genders so it was important for the piece to be gender neutral. However from the heavy use of black this could indicate a more male appeal which would represent the band. For the digi pak i wanted it to be a single but with extra tracks. this is because where it is a new band the buyer would get a better taste for the music. Also, i have featured the music video onto the digi pak. I have done this as it is a good way to promote the music video but also the people who buy the pak would feel it is better value for money. I think this is important as if the target market is for youth they would not have much depositble income especally with students therefore the idea for getting more for there moeny would be better. Due to this i would feel the best retail preice for my digi pak would be £3.99.  The front has been done in white which contrasts to the black so is easy and clear to see. i have not included the number of the tracks which is shown in the  dreamboats and petticoats ablum below left. This is because i wanted people to look at the track names and i think it makes them stand out alot more. i have used a front that is quite formal. this is because i wanted a strong contrast to make it di

Digi Pak Production

Over the last week, i have started and nearly finished the digi pak. The design of my digi pak are scan in below.

To take the photographs for the album cover i had to do a lot of prep work. First from a local shop i bought several glow sticks for the cover of my digi pack. My orginal plan was to cut the glow sticks to write the words through lines like match sticks. However, what i didnt realised was when i cut the sticks the colour leaks out and turns to liquid. This is shown in the photo to the left.

Although there was a set back i really liked the idea. This was because the band/name would be "lost in the lights". So through lots of tape and an extras pair of hands i stuck the glow sticks in the shape of the words shown left. However, this proved difficult as the letters were difficlut to construct. so with letters such the S and the L i joined them together (yellow letters). Plus, with words such as in and the, the glow sticks were not malable to create them. although through the disaster of the liquid drama, i found that i could write with the liquid which i did and worked well. The G i wrote in the orange colour but i was not as clear and harder to write with so i used the blue over the top. The last letter S was not clear as i could not write on the tape. However, i used photoshop to change this.

Also, before i started this i played with different persitions with thew glow sticks for the cd cover design and different parts of the cover. I wanted to get a shot taken from the below angle so to do this i attached them to the light to create these photos.

Ancillary plan

Over this week i have been researching for my ancillary tasks which consist of  a digi pak and a poster and feel that after my research i can start to produce my ancillary tasks. For the leaflet inside the digi pak i have decided to create a leaflet that is mainly photo based. Due to my music video is promoting the song i wanted to make the digi pak about the band to cover all espects in promoting. Also, as my digi pak will include the music video, the song and extra songs. If i am including the songs then i feel i should include the lyrics in the leaflet too. I know that the cover of the digi pak will also be the cover of the leaflet as on most albums the ablum cover is the leaflet in side.

Dimenisions of the digi pak
Below i have created a diagram of the measurements of the digi pak. this will help me to create the design of my digi pak. Also, i took pictures of the blank cover which i will based my digi pak on.

Also to make sure that my leaflet will fit the digi pak i decided to measure the amount of paper that could fit in the wallet slot for the leaflet. I did this by folding a couple of pieces of paper together and seeing how much it could take. This is shown through the video below. From this i found it could take the width of 6 sheets but these are from my notebook so they might be thiner than the paper i would print on.

Final Cut- The Finished Music Video

Above is our groups final cut of our music video. i think the music video is successful in portaying a narrative cross performance music video. However, i think the performance part with shots such as the guitars and drums could have been improved by having filmed performers but we where not able to achieve that due to the origanal band not being able to perform. Even though this had happened i think that with the shots of the instruments added to the narractive it makes the audience more aware of the song and its reavance to the song.Due to this i think we have achieved the purpose of this music video which our purpose was to promote the song not the band. In addition, i think the scene in 2-07 to 2-37ish is really effective as the scene fit perfect with the music. This is due to when the female is really bored on her boyfriend and not enjoying herself the lyrics that our being played are "seems like your having fun". These lyrics are ironic and therefore give emphasis to the visual image. Furthermore, we used a shot that too time and is long in length. i think this is effective as combined with the shot montage with all the important things it acts as a build up to the end.

Latest production update and New things!

While doing final editing we have done a few changes. when editing the sequence of the facebook scene we desicded after reviewing the music video that it felt too long and could lose the audiences interest. therefore we decided to break this up but either using another clip or something else. We then thought that the best thing to do was to put a band shot which was of the drum. This gave varity which made an improvement. Another thing while editing was that we found that the way the bedroom pan shots where odd in the way they were filmed. So, Morgy then thought she would put this shot in reverese. In addition to disise the cut she added a dissolve. This worked as when i looked at the shot i did not notice the reserse added or even the cut that was made between each room. Due to this i feel that the audience reaction would be the same.

NEW THINGS !

https://docs.google.com/document/d/1pKR5p5VUzxRY2BdPzdpZUqSUqZOWeRj03dOgQumf7s0/edit?hl=en&authkey=CLWgkoUE

During this production i have used techniques that i have learnt  in the previous production in AS. However, while creating this music video i have learnt more things. One thing i have learnt through using Adobe premiere pro is how top resovle my rending problems. This was due to when having to render the clips i notice that when completed there are some things that were not done. That was untill i noticed that the bar (shown by a arrow on the link or in the box above) has to cover the whole film in order to render  all the clips that are needed.

Sound
In addition i have learnt something to be aware on when working with sound on a production. I learnt this from members of my group. They told me that we need to make sure that there is no cliping in the audio. However, i did not know what this meant.

I learnt that cliping is wherethe audio starts going to loud and clashes. this dissorts the music which then cuts out. To make sure this doesnt happen we have to check if the line turns red. This is shown through a example video i did of on our production

Layouts/designs

The layouts and designs for the sets we used for our music video where mainly naturally built. This was because as our two characters where college students we used alot of the college grounds. However, we did have to change about some items such as the benches in the quad - a place to eat outside- this was to make sure they were not in the way. Also, we had to be careful of filming infront of windows as the students in their lessons watching us often got bored kept looking at the camera. Also, a problem the windows caused was the reflection kept showing of the camera while filming the scene which broke the narative. However, this was sovled by fiming at a different time of day.  In addition, another natural set was when we did scenes on a street. Due, to not having the funding to make a new street as a set like some Hollywood films could do, we used the one next to Ryans house. In addition we used local parks in totton to create some scenes.

Props

In our music video we have used a number of different props here is a list:
-clock
-laptops
-ipod < the ipod and earphones where important as it showed the link between the music and the story and made a good introduction to the music video.
-earphones
-musical instruments (guitar,bass,drums)
-sandwhich
-bag
-keys
-bottle
^ we used the bottle as a football as at the time we could not find a football. However, while filming another clip we noticed people playing with a random piece of rubbish as a football anyway. Also, when we were filming we found a bottle anyway and used that.
- phone.

New Order

Week commencing 13/12/2010

This week i was unable to work on the production  due to being away on holiday but in my absence, the group continued on the production. In that week the msn shots where filmed which inclued a pan shot. Morgy, worked on the fast pased shots which included the important moments of the storyline to reinforce them to the audience. In addition this adds a build up to the ending where it is happy and the guy gets the girl. Also the group added some effects such as dissovle and fade. the fade was added at the beginning of the ending clip a it was rather long.

Today in this lesson, i reviewed the film to see which parts have been added and looked how it has progressed. We worked on a few minor things through adding effects such as a ghost effect and dissolve

Filming 05/11/10

On the 5th November our group went to film at the Totton and Eling Community Centre where we organised our party/gig. First we organised the band set up and filmed different shots of the band individually. For example we did different shots of each instrument like with the guitar we had close ups of the strings with the hand strumming. Once we got the band shots we got the people to come into the hall to try and film the crowd shots.

However, we had some major problems when we where trying to film. Firstly, one of our group members, Rich, could not attend due to unexpected family emergencies. Also, where people turned up with alcohol most people ended up getting drunk and out of control which wasnt very helpful when trying to organise people for acting as extras. Plus, even though most people turned up from our facebook group - people invited people who invited people. So therefore we thought that on the plus side that the crowd shots will look good with lots of people. However, the mass of people was not enough to fill a crowd and only two lines from the stage.  Due to this lack of the crowd we where not able to do scenes with are two characters meeting through the crowd. But we where still managed to get some shots with a party feel. The video below shows why we could not use this.

5/11/10 - lesson review

Here are some test shots and the set that we used for our filming and photos
